Many parents come to dread family photoshoots. The kids won’t get ready, one spouse feels forced, someone is missing a sock and then you show up late and flustered to your family photoshoot.
It doesn’t have to be a hectic experience! Here are a few of my favorite tips and tricks to make your family photoshoot a fun and memorable experience!
1. Talk to Them:
I encourage my clients to start telling their children about the upcoming photoshoot right when they book. Kids are inherently curious so encourage that curiosity and show them examples of fun photographs. Let them know who you will be sharing the photos with. Do grandparents live out of town? Let your child know these images will be a special gift that grandma and grandpa will cherish forever! Perhaps even Santa might see a few? 😉
2. Play Pretend:
Have a mock photoshoot with your iPhone! Dress up in fun costumes and pose up a storm! Let your littles pick out your “costume” and let them take their own photos of you. Not only will this be a fun memory for them and produce some adorable iPhone images, but it will also help them associate photoshoots as something fun and special enough to wear “dress up” clothes.
It can be as simple as a new stuffed toy, a popsicle, or a trip to the movies. Pick something that will give your child an incentive to be on their best behavior! And if your little one responds to immediate feedback, bring along a special treat and let your photographer know that they can reward your child between shots!
BONUS TIP: RELAX
Your kids can sense your energy. If you’re stressed and worried it will be harder for your kiddos to relax. So, before your family photoshoot, do something special for yourself! A bubble bath, a glass of wine, or a new outfit; take a moment for yourself to get centered and remember to enjoy your photoshoot.
The most important part of the photos are the people who are in them!
Family photoshoots can be a fun and memorable event! I hope these tips help you get the most out of your next family photoshoot!
